A late-night pursuit that began with reports of a stabbing in Vista came to a dramatic end with a wrong-way crash in San Marcos. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the events unfolded late Saturday evening when deputies responded to an altercation at the intersection of East Orange Street and The Circle. Upon arrival, the officers witnessed a Honda Accord hastily exiting the area, prompting a chase that concluded with the suspect driving counter to traffic on Highway 78.
The driver's refusal to stop for a traffic check initiated deputies to attempt to safely pull over the vehicle by activating their emergency lights. However, the suspect drove away, ignoring multiple stop lights aggressively. With safety as a paramount concern, the pursuit was abruptly terminated when the driver recklessly entered the SR-78 freeway driving in the wrong direction, as shared by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
It was a mere ten minutes later when the California Highway Patrol received calls about a collision on the same highway near Rancho Santa Fe. Onlookers described the suspect clambering out of the wrecked vehicle and leaping into a nearby ditch off Smilax Road. Vista and San Marcos sheriff's deputies verified the crashed car as the one involved in the earlier chase. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was apprehended with the assistance of a Sheriff's K-9 unit and transported to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of a leg injury.
Early reports of a stabbing at the location of the fight in Vista were later discounted as unfounded. Impressively, the dangerous incident, which could have resulted in a more tragic outcome, fortunately, involved no other vehicles. The California Highway Patrol has now taken the reins to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash fully.
