
Tragedy struck at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, where a 49-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine welfare check by deputies. The incident, which occurred last Wednesday at about 2:38 P.M., quickly escalated as deputies and medical staff at the jail administered CPR in a desperate attempt to revive the individual. According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, the man was transported to a local hospital after the Milpitas Fire Department and Medical Services arrived at 2:46 P.M.
Despite best efforts to save his life, the incarcerated man was pronounced dead a few days later, last Friday, at approximately 1:46 A.M., while under the hospital's care. Sheriff’s Office Detectives have since been called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death at both Elmwood Correctional Facility and the local hospital. Early reports suggest that the death may have been a suicide, with no evidence of foul play uncovered at this stage of the investigation.
