Two men were arrested following a traffic stop by deputies of Constable Mark Herman's Office earlier this month on Atascocita Road. The individuals, named Xavier Gaines and Dontavius Mathes, were in a vehicle that was pulled over in the 19200 block of the busy stretch of road, setting off a string of events that would lead to a discovery of modified firearms.
The July 7 routine stop quickly escalated after an investigation into the vehicle and its passengers commenced. Deputies uncovered that Gaines and Mathes were in possession of two Glock handguns modified with a switch designed to quickly and illegally convert the semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic guns. It was also found that one of these handguns had been reported as stolen by the Houston Police Department, further complicating the legal situation for the two suspects.
According to a social media post from Constable Mark Herman's Office, "Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. Xavier Gaines' bond was set at $7,500.00 out of the 351st District Court. Dontavius Mathes' bond was set at $5,000.00 out of the 351st District Court."
The full extent of the legal process for Gaines and Mathes will unfold in court.
