A tragic single-vehicle collision has claimed the life of a teenager and left another in a critical state in Winter Haven, Florida. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the fatality of a 17-year-old boy from Winter Haven who was driving a white 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck. The crash also critically injured a 15-year-old girl from Deltona who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident, which was reported just after 3 p.m. on Monday. The first responders found both teens trapped inside the truck after it had struck an oak tree on Spirit Lake Road, just south of Rolling Oaks Drive, as reported by WFTV.
The consequences of the collision were severe. The 15-year-old girl sustained head trauma, a brain bleed, facial fractures, lung damage, and multiple broken bones. Investigators are still to determine if seat belts were worn at the time of the crash. The Sheriff’s Office noted that weather conditions, particularly wet roads from rain, might have contributed to the accident leading the driver to lose control while navigating a curve, as detailed by FOX 13 News. Following the incident, the 15-year-old girl was transported to Tampa Hospital, where she remains in a critical, but stable condition. According to FOX 13 News, detectives at the scene collected evidence indicating that the truck was southbound on Spirit Lake Road when the driver lost control of the curve.
