In the early hours of Friday, a 16-year-old girl was critically injured in a shooting incident on Chicago's West Side. The incident occurred around 1:40 A.M., at a residential complex in the Homan Square neighborhood, according to the Chicago Tribune. The victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was subsequently transported to Mount Sinai Hospital.
No arrests have been made, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, with detectives from Area Four currently investigating the matter. This tragic event appears to be part of a surge in gun violence in the city, as within minutes of this shooting, six other people were shot in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood, "including a 15-year-old boy," as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
The surge in violence has raised concerns among community members and local officials alike, who are increasingly alarmed by the frequency and severity of such events. The victim's identity has not been released, but her condition has been noted as critical, and she is currently receiving treatment at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
The Chicago Police Department has not yet provided any additional information about potential suspects or motives, and, the investigation is ongoing.
