A senior living community in Tempe has raised a glass to victory, as its on-site bistro, Dolce Vita Bistro at Mirabella at ASU, clinched a prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Far from the stereotypical student fare one might imagine near a university setting, this establishment has carved out a niche with its impressive wine offerings. Dolce Vita, located at the intersection of University and Mill Avenue in the heart of downtown Tempe, is open to the public and has earned international recognition for its wine list curated by dining room manager Jody Kosterlitz.
Though it's nestled in the nook of a senior living high-rise, an accolade often reserved for high-end, commercial restaurants has been given to the decently wine-curated Dolce Vita Bistro according to ABC15. The Wine Spectator's stamp of approval, gracing the July issue read by more than 3 million people worldwide, is a nod not just to the establishment's near 200 wine selections but also to the unexpected stories that the resident life of leisure can produce. "And I can go up and take a nap," said former ASU Engineering professor Bob Rankin, reflecting the relaxed lifestyle at Mirabella following an early lunch.
"Our goal has always been to offer a diverse and high-quality wine selection that complements our fantastic culinary offerings and enhances the dining experience for both residents and public patrons," stated Kosterlitz, who took her experience from hospital nutrition into dining management with a commitment to learning from the venue's worldly residents. Kosterlitz's initiative has distinguished Dolce Vita as one of the few senior living establishments to be acknowledged internationally with the Wine Spectator award.
According to KXAN, Michael Sessler, Director of Dining Services at Mirabella, expressed his pride over Kosterlitz and her team's achievement, "I am incredibly proud of Jody and her team for their dedication in shaping our exceptional beverage program over the past three and a half years." Along with near 200 selections, Dolce Vita's wine list strikes a balance between classic and modern varietals, resonating well with the program's mission to highlight an establishment's commitment to providing outstanding wine service.
The Wine Spectator's Restaurant Awards program commended nearly 3,800 restaurants in 2024, with the Tempe restaurant being one of the 58 esteemed locales in Arizona to be recognized. Wine Spectator editor Marvin R. Shanken celebrated not just Dolce Vita but the entire industry's resurgence and focus on quality wine service post-pandemic. Dolce Vita's decision to open its doors to the larger public was indeed a key qualifier for the consideration of the Wine Spectator award, a detail that emphasizes the inclusivity and wide-reaching impact of an exceptional wine program, even one that blooms in a place meant to comfort those in the twilight of their years.
