Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is not backing down in his legal pursuit against "Annunciation House," a border NGO he accuses of aiding in unlawful immigration practices. Despite a district judge's dismissal of the case, Paxton is proceeding with an appeal, steadfast in his claim that the organization's activities exacerbate the immigration crisis along the Texan border with Mexico. According to an announcement on Texas Attorney General's official website, Paxton's move comes after a thorough investigation initiated by Governor Abbott in December 2022 into NGOs' roles in "planning and facilitating the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across our borders."
The inquiry into Annunciation House, led by the Office of the Attorney General painted a picture of an organization operating outside the boundaries of the law, as disclosed in court. While trying to enter Mexico, employees of the organization have allegedly been found escorting aliens, some of whom had been previously turned away by Border Patrol, back into the United States. With "Annunciation House" branding itself as the go-to sanctuary for individuals who have failed to surmount the border wall, the NGO's brazen actions have attracted the scrutiny of law enforcement. However, the executive director defended their position, stating under oath that allowing police inside the facility would strike terror into the hearts of those seeking refuge within its walls.
The legal clash first heated up earlier this year when Paxton's office requested an El Paso district judge to halt what they viewed as the house's unlawful operations. In response, the judge sharply criticized the Attorney General's department, dismissing the investigation as "outrageous and intolerable" and unfoundedly suggesting that the probe was driven by the organization's affiliation to the Catholic Church—an accusation made without supporting evidence. In defiance of the judge's statements, Attorney General Paxton has declared, "For too long, Annunciation House has flouted the law and contributed to the worsening illegal immigration crisis at Texas’s border with Mexico," firmly establishing his intentions to press onward with the legal challenge.
