According to a Houston Chronicle report, this includes the ambiguous yet troubling charge that hospital staff have been "intentionally misdiagnosing" patients in order to secure Medicaid coverage for hormone treatments — an allegation the hospital adamantly denies.
Last week, revelations of an investigation by a U.S. House oversight committee into the purported misdeeds were unveiled, concurrently with news of an inquest spearheaded by the Texas Attorney General, and the Office of Inspector General's correspondence to state legislators concerning possible financial improprieties. This multi-tiered scrutiny seems to stem, at least in part, from statements Sivadge has made—although she has since tempered the certainty of these claims by admitting to the New York Post that she does not "directly know" whether Medicaid was actually charged for these services.
In response to the burgeoning scandal, Texas Children's has publicly declared their immediate initiation of an "internal investigation." As described in a recent statement, the hospital conducted a review that has so far failed to detect any fraudulent activity. They ensure that their provided services were in "accordance with Medicaid billing and payment guidelines," emphasizing their standing as Texas's preeminent Medicaid provider and their commitment to uphold the trust families place in their healthcare services.
This controversy is only the most current instance in a chain of contentious debates over transgender care at the nation's biggest children's hospital, inflamed by activist Christopher Rufo's exposés. Rufo, who previously stoked dissension in the cultural battleground over "critical race theory," has now launched a salvo against transgender healthcare interventions. Texas Children’s, nonetheless, maintains as per their statement, "if we uncover any rogue or unauthorized criminal activity, we will take swift action to correct the issue."
