In response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Beryl, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has moved to alleviate some of the pressure on affected Texans. An executive order issued by the Governor suspends the seven-day waiting period for unemployment insurance claims for those unemployed as a direct result of the natural disaster.
This measure aims to provide immediate financial relief to those who have lost their livelihoods in the wake of the hurricane. The suspension applies to individuals who meet specific criteria, struck by the disaster and are eligible for unemployment benefits but not receiving disaster unemployment assistance for the waiting period. Having received a presidential disaster declaration from the White House on July 9, the impacted Texans can now access the support they need quicker than they would have under normal circumstances.
Abbott, wielding the power granted to him under Section 207.0212 of the Texas Labor Code, not only recognized the immediate needs of his constituents but also the necessity for an expedited process in times of emergency.
