Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially proclaimed, during a press event in Taipei, the establishment of a State of Texas Taiwan Office aimed at enhancing economic and cultural connections between Texas and Taiwan. The governor underscored the importance of this decision as it seeks to promote more commerce, investment, and collaboration. "Today, I am announcing two key initiatives that will help bolster our economic relationship and foster unprecedented prosperity for our two peoples," Abbott said, according to an announcement on the official state website.
Preceding the significant unveiling of the State of Texas Taiwan Office, Governor Abbott joined hands with Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs Jyh-Huei Kuo to sign an Economic Development Statement of Intent (EDSI). This agreement, as described on the office's website, intensifies efforts to boost investment, expand trade, and forge innovation in pivotal industries that include semiconductor manufacturing and electric vehicles, aiming to create jobs and enhance energy resilience. With Texas and Taiwan both playing influential roles in the global economy, their collaboration sets the table for shared growth and development, evident from Governor Abbott's visit and agreements made in Taipei.
The State of Texas Taiwan Office will be nestled within the Office of the Governor, specifically within the Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office. It is designed as a hub for facilitating tighter cooperation and nurturing mutual economic advancement, along with cultural exchanges between the two regions. The office will enable stakeholders in both Texas and Taiwan to connect more efficiently, fostering the economic growth that both economies strive for.
Among those in attendance at the press conference and signing ceremony, alongside Governor Abbott, were Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott, Secretary of State Jane Nelson, Chairwoman Angie Chen Button, and several state senators and representatives. The Texas Economic Development Corporation, a nonprofit and independent entity, sponsored and covered the expenses for the trip, as stated in the Governor's press release. This organization, in tandem with the Governor’s Economic Development & Tourism Office, constitutes the bedrock of Governor Abbott’s strategy to elevate Texas as a prime location for business and innovation.
