Thousands in DeKalb and Fulton counties are facing the aftermath of heavy storms, as power outages continue to affect residents. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, more than 16,000 were initially without power after the storms on Sunday night, with 2,000 customers in DeKalb and 340 in Fulton still in the dark as of yesterday afternoon.
Georgia's weather has been relentless, with the National Weather Center in Peachtree City having issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett County that extended until 2:45 a.m. yesterday. Drivers were warned to avoid flooded areas, and Hall County officials reported downed trees and power lines, particularly in the Clermont Area. The Hall County Sheriff's Office advised residents, "If you have to drive, keep your speeds low and your headlights on."
Meanwhile, 11Alive reported outages with around 5,300 customers affected from 78 different outages in DeKalb, and around 1,200 in Henry County. Downed trees were also a significant issue, with crews working overnight to restore power. Outages continued into the afternoon, with the Georgia Power map showing 1,850 customers still impacted.
The continuous weather onslaught is compounded as Hurricane Beryl, now a category 1, made landfall on the Texas coast. Beryl's impact is expected to be felt with storm surges and heavy rainfall. Local areas are bracing for more storms, although the presence of drier air is predicted to somewhat ease conditions. However, the tropical storm has contributed to a high alert status for residents along its anticipated path.
