Tiffany Tucker Shatters Glass Ceiling as UMBC's First Woman and Black Athletics Director

In a move that marks a significant milestone for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Tiffany Tucker has been appointed as the new athletics director, making history as the university's first woman and Black individual to hold the position. The announcement, made on July 16th, communicates Tucker's start in her groundbreaking role set for August 15, as reported by CBS News Baltimore.

Tucker's resume includes a tenure as deputy athletics director at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), where she began working in August 2021. Her experience extends to administrative positions at Elizabeth City State University, Hampton University, and South Carolina State University. "I am beyond thrilled to embark on this incredible journey as the new athletics director at UMBC," Tucker stated, as per Fox Baltimore. She also coached basketball at several universities, including Allegheny College and Radford University.

UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby praised Tucker's leadership qualities and dedication to student-athlete development. Ashby highlighted Tucker as a "visionary leader and change agent," emphasizing her commitment to equity and the holistic support of student-athletes. "She has an impressive work ethic and a track record of promoting equity and supporting student-athletes in all areas of their lives," Ashby stated in an announcement echoed by Fox Baltimore.

With this appointment, Tucker becomes the sixth individual to lead UMBC's athletic department.
