The Fourth of July weekend brought not only fireworks and festivities to Georgia's lakes and waterways but also tragedy and a slew of arrests. Georgia officials reported two drownings along with a significant number of Boating Under the Influence (BUI) arrests during the holiday. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the drownings occurred on Tybee Island and Lake Rabun, casting a shadow over the celebrations.
The holiday revelry claimed the life of a 16-year-old Atlanta native, Laquavis McCray, who drowned on Tybee Island after being overtaken by river water. "Unfortunately, he did go under and not resurface. He drowned, and he was recovered by Chatham Marine Control hours later," DNR spokesperson Mark McKinnon told FOX 5 Atlanta. Thirty-nine-year-old Robert Clinkscales also drowned near a boathouse on Lake Rabun, with his body being located in 40 to 50 feet of water, approximately 30 feet from the boathouse, as reported by AccessWDUN.
In addition to these tragic incidents, law enforcement officials were busy with BUI enforcement. On Lake Lanier, BUI arrests had reached ten by yesterday morning. Overall, Georgia authorities made 27 BUI arrests across various lakes, with the majority occurring at Lake Lanier. "We tell folks you’ve got to be extra vigilant when you’re around the water," McKinnon emphasized in his comments to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Boating mishaps were also part of the weekend incidents. On Lake Lanier, for instance, a boating collision at Buford Dam Park resulted in injuries and the arrest of a rental operator for not following state regulations. Also, one man suffered a head injury after his personal watercraft hit a wake on Lake Hartwell, as stated by AccessWDUN. Amidst the celebrations, these events serve as a stark reminder of the safety precautions necessary when engaging in water-based activities.
