In Dolton, Illinois, the political landscape is set to potentially shift as a group of former and current elected officials have announced their campaigns to challenge incumbent Mayor Tiffany Henyard. The kickoff event, held in the parking lot of the Free-N-Deed Market food pantry, was attended by roughly 70 supporters, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.
Dolton Trustee Jason House, recently named mayor pro tempore amidst controversies surrounding Henyard, is leading the charge against the mayor. House and his team are campaigning on transparency and fiscal responsibility, aiming to "change the narrative around Dolton" and to restore "order, decency and dignity to this community," as told to ABC7 Chicago. Their platform explicitly contrasts with Henyard's leadership, which is under federal investigation for suspected misuse of public funds.
As part of his campaign, House promised to unveil the village's financial secrets and to also create an environment that is more welcoming to small businesses. In a bid to explicitly address concerns over fiscal mismanagement, House stated, "We're going to have balance budgets, and those balanced budgets will account for all the mismanagement we've seen over the last years." With an emphasis on public safety reform and engaging more closely with the community, as expressed in a Chicago Tribune report, House also highlighted his commitment to fiscally responsible governance.
Dolton resident Kimberly Haynes shared her enthusiasm for the potential changes a House administration could bring: "I'm very excited to hear that we're trying to bring ourselves back to that form of community where everybody is included, everybody feels heard and people feel safe," according to what she told ABC7 Chicago. This sentiment was echoed amidst the collective frustration from community members over what they term as current administration's betrayal of public trust.
Henyard has yet to respond to ABC7's request for comment. The stage is set for a contentious election season in Dolton with the forthcoming February 2025 primary followed by the mayoral election in April of the same year.
