The City of Tucson is moving forward with an ambitious plan to reshape its urban corridors, courting public input to fine-tune a strategy aimed at bolstering affordable housing and fostering environmentally conscious development. Recognizing the multifaceted challenges of growth, housing scarcity, and climate change, city officials have called on residents to voice their concerns and contribute to the policy-making process.

On the heels of directives issued last October, the Planning and Development Services Department has scheduled public forums for community members to learn more about the proposed changes and share their insights. The heart of the initiative is a set of new codes designed to streamline development along key corridors - pivoting toward a mix of residential opportunities and refashioning underused lots into vibrant community assets, according to a recent report. Despite, the effort's altruistic aims some residents harbor concerns about potential unintended consequences, such as displacements or alterations of neighborhood character.

The department has outlined a dual approach to community engagement on the new corridor redevelopment standards, with one in-person meeting slated for August 6 at the City of Tucson Sentinel Building from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Those unable to attend physically can log into a virtual meeting via Zoom on August 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
