A tragic incident unfolded in South Austin on Wednesday afternoon, where a house fire claimed the lives of two individuals. According to KVUE, the fire occurred at a single-story residence located at 1006 S. Center St., with the Austin Fire Department responding to the blaze around 3 p.m.

The rapid response of AFD firefighters was met with challenging conditions characterized by heavy fire, poor visibility, and intense heat. Complicating their efforts were the hoarder conditions within the house which made it difficult for personnel to navigate the space and locate the victims. Both adults were removed from the house and immediately administered CPR before being transported to different local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Tragically, they were pronounced dead upon arrival, as KXAN reported.
An ongoing investigation seeks to determine the cause of the fatal fire, as per KXAN. Early reports indicate that no working smoke detectors were found at the scene—a detail underscored by AFD as they reiterated the vital importance of functioning smoke alarms in homes. Furthermore, more than 45 firefighters and a spread of fifteen AFD units, along with five ambulances, responded to the emergency, where two firefighters sustained minor injuries in their efforts to extinguish the fire and rescue the occupants.
