Travelers and residents around North Kihei may need to adjust their commutes next week. According to a public notice released by the County of Maui, a key segment of South Kihei Road will be inaccessible for a stretch of five days due to necessary sand cleanup operations.
The closure, impacting the area from Kaonoulu Street to Ohukai Road, is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. and extend until 3 p.m. each day from Monday, July 15, through to Friday, July 19. While this thoroughfare is known to sustain a steady flow of commuters and tourists alike, it's set for a temporary hiatus to ensure public safety and the integrity of the road's surface. Notwithstanding, the County has confirmed that exceptions will be made for local traffic, and of course, emergency vehicles.
Detours and delays are on the horizon for motorists who frequent this route. The detour will redirect traffic through Kenolio Road during the restricted hours. The authorities are alerting drivers to factor in extra time for their journeys or to seek alternative routes when possible. This preemptive announcement aims to minimize the disruption and confusion that could stem from such closures.
Local businesses and residents are bracing for this inconvenience, but the promise of safer, cleaner roads may very well offset the short-term upheaval. As these government-led clean-up campaigns take shape, one imagines the anticipation of smoother travels ahead. Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works Highways Division is asking everyone to exercise caution when navigating the detours, so the work can proceed unimpeded and on schedule.
