According to QCNews, around midnight on Friday, July 26, 2024, a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle (UTV) struck the horse and then fled the scene. Responding to emergency calls, Currituck County authorities located the vehicle. Porter Williamson, a 57-year-old Virginia resident, was arrested as he attempted to make an escape during the towing of the said vehicle.
A report by the News & Observer revealed that the incident was witnessed by a beachgoer who was surf fishing at the time. Referred to affectionately as Bullwinkle by locals and known for his "comically annoying" behavior toward other horses, the 10-year-old wild stallion suffered severe injuries from the collision. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund reported that "Bullwinkle's injuries were severe and ultimately fatal," leading their veterinarian to humanely euthanize him early Saturday morning.
