A Warren man, James Burbridge Jr., has been convicted for his involvement in distributing child sexually abusive material. The 33-year-old was found guilty last week of aggravated distribution of child sexually abusive activity and using a computer to commit a crime, with the former carrying a sentence of up to 15 years and the latter less than 10 years. According to details disclosed during the bench trial in Macomb County Circuit Court, Burbridge coerced his then-girlfriend Damya Lovely to perform and record a sexual act with a young child, subsequently having her send him the video, as reported by The Detroit News.
Details of the case elaborate that Assistant Prosecutor Colleen Worden conducted Burbridge's trial with assistance from Law School Intern Ben Wiegand, and Judge Joseph Toia found him guilty. Now, Burbridge's sentencing is slated for September 4. Lovely faced charges including two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and, after pleading guilty, will be sentenced on August 14. She had been initially at risk of facing life imprisonment for the first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge before agreeing to testify against Burbridge, as cited by Macomb County, Michigan.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido emphasized the outcome of the trial, stating, "This verdict and plea ensures that the defendants will be held accountable for their actions against a child and serves as a reminder that such crimes will not be tolerated in our community", as per Macomb County, Michigan. The case brings to light, the persistent and shadowed issue of child exploitation, galvanizing efforts of the local judicial system to address and penalize such grievous acts.
