With the 2024 Paris Olympics on the horizon, the District is gearing up for a celebration of international scale right in the nation’s capital. Under the banner of being the #SportsCapital, businesses within the District are preparing to welcome sports enthusiasts from around the globe by extending their hours. The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) has already made moves to ensure that the local nightlife can keep pace with the round-the-clock activities brought on by this major sporting event, which kicks off on July 26 and runs through August 11.

Eligible establishments, including those serving up food, drinks, and entertainment, are being offered the chance to keep their doors open 24 hours, and to serve alcohol until 4 am during designated times. This won't just be during the Olympics, but also during the Paralympic Games, which are set to take place from August 28 to September 8. Dine All Night and Art All Night events in September will also enjoy extended hours, according to the District's announcement. This initiative, by allowing participating businesses to extend their hours, aims to foster a lively atmosphere that complements the festive spirit of the games.

Mayor Muriel Bowser has highlighted the capital’s reputation as a sports hub, noting the unity that major sporting events tend to foster among viewers and fans. “We’re the Sports Capital and we know that sports bring people together and that many people enjoy cheering on their favorite athletes and teams alongside other fans," said Mayor Bowser. The extended hours program is part of a broader support to local businesses and a nod to the communal nature of the Olympic celebrations.

Navigating through the bureaucratic tape is made simpler for businesses as the ABCA has committed to assisting in the registration process. ABCA Director Fred Moosally has expressed enthusiasm about the agency's role, stating, “ABCA is pleased to support and facilitate the Extended Hours program to allow licensed businesses to sell, serve, and permit the consumption of alcohol during special events,” Venues wishing to take advantage of the extended hours must submit the necessary forms and fees through provided links, with deadlines set just before each series of events.

While these policies are aimed at enhancing the festive experience, participation for venues is not mandatory. Additional guidance and support for licensees is available from the ABRA’s Licensing Division. For patrons and those following the events, the ABCA will publish an updated roster of establishments that are participating in the program, ensuring that the information is easily accessible to the public.
