In an effort to curb the surge of street racing, local law enforcement agencies have been given a sharp tool to tackle the problem – the power to tow vehicles involved in illegal racing. As per RCW 46.55.113 (2)(l), officers now have the authorization to tow away cars whose drivers are arrested for racing conduct that violates RCW 46.61.500 or 46.61.530, as well as any similar municipal rules.
What this means for those caught in the act is an immediate loss of their vehicle, which can be held for up to 72 hours following a first offense. A second offense can lead to an ever harsher penalty – vehicle forfeiture. This enforcement stride was put into action under Senate Bill 5606, aimed squarely at putting the brakes on a dangerous and illegal pastime. Details found on Pierce County Sheriff's Department blotter blog highlight the authority granted to the officers in the field.
The crackdown on street racing comes in response to community concerns over safety. Pole positions at the stoplight and makeshift finish lines have proven perilous to more than just the participants; they pose significant risks to uninvolved commuters and pedestrians alike. Racing and reckless driving, seen by some thrill-seekers as a game, bring with them all too real consequences.
