Early on the morning of July 14th, an unusual traffic hazard caused quite the stir in Parkland near the intersection of 158th St E and B St E. The cause of the commotion? A marsupial — specifically, a 'suspect' with a long tail, measuring 2 1/2 feet tall, sporting large ears, and equipped with diminutive forearms, as reported by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department blotter. The scene unfolded when Washington State Patrol Troopers and Pierce County Deputies were called to manage what could certainly be described as an out-of-ordinary roadblock.
Upon the troopers' arrival, they encountered the marsupial actively hopping around the roadway, causing concern for the safety of both commuters and the animal. A strategic decision was made not merely to try but to secure the animal. This led to a somewhat impromptu partnership between law enforcement and Parkland residents, who came together to wrangle the adventurous critter. After multiple attempts, "a Trooper was able to tackle the suspect and take it into custody", the Sheriff's Department blotter stated.
This incident, which could be likened to a scene straight out of an Australian suburb, thankfully concluded without injury to anyone involved — human or marsupial. The response team set up a containment area, which effectively minimized the potential for any harm coming to the wayward animal or the public. It proved to be a surreal morning maneuver for those on duty but ended with the safe apprehension of the misplaced marsupial.
As for the adventurous animal, no specific details were shared regarding its origin or how it came to find itself in the middle of the road in Parkland. What is certain, however, is that it will need to find not only a safer place but a more appropriate setting for its innate hopping tendencies. According to the Sheriff's Department blotter, the operation showcased "great job everyone" handling the unusual suspect.
