West Sacramento's continued efforts to update and maintain its park amenities took a positive turn this week with the announcement that the city has received a $30,000 boost from West Sac Play, a community-driven nonprofit. The funds are earmarked to replace outdated drinking fountains at local parks with new hydration stations, an upgrade that's both necessary and timely.
The city, long recognizing the need to steadily refresh and to consistently provide quality recreational spaces, is set to replace five fountains that have been deemed past their prime. According to a report by FOX40, the new hydration stations will be more than mere thirst quenchers—they're designed to cater to a variety of park-goers, featuring accessible drinking options, water bottle refill spigots, and even water bowls for dogs.
The check from West Sac Play was presented during what has been a celebratory month for West Sacramento's parks system. July, designated as "Parks Make Life Better Month," saw city officials, including the Mayor, gathering at Bridgeway Island Park to honor Parks & Recreation staff for their diligence. "The City Celebrated "July is Parks Make Life Better Month" today with a Mayor's proclamation," noted a Facebook post from the City of West Sacramento, Government. The event doubled as the backdrop for West Sac Play's contribution to the city's infrastructure, highlighting the organization’s decade-long commitment to enhancing local parks.
The partnership between the City of West Sacramento and nonprofit groups like West Sac Play has proven to effectively serve the community through initiatives aimed to improve public spaces. Notably, over the past 10 years, West Sac Play has managed to raise to directly fund more than $80,000 toward amenities such as shade structures in playgrounds.
