A Wimauma man, Alfredo Davila, Jr., 30, entered a guilty plea today to the charge of possessing ammunition as a convicted felon; a federal offense that could land him up to 15 years behind bars. This development comes from an official statement released by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg.
On the incident leading to Davila's arrest, on February 18, deputies were dispatched in response to a distressing 911 call wherein a gun was allegedly brandished at the face of the caller. These deputies of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, having received a physical description and a locale, confronted Davila, Jr. who was found discarding a suspicious black object.
This case is part and parcel of the larger Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which seeks to knit together the various strata of law enforcement and the communities they patrol, all in the name of curbing violent crime and reducing gun violence. PSN's renewed vigor came courtesy of a strategy unveiled by the Department on May 26, 2021, aiming to build trust within communities and bolster organizations dedicated to preventative measures against crime.
Davila, Jr., who at the time of the 2024 offense was under federal supervised release for prior convictions related to drug distribution and firearm possession, was swiftly identified and apprehended by deputies. They recovered a loaded magazine containing 19 live ammunition rounds, aligning with the description given by the 911 caller.
While a sentencing date is still forthcoming, the plea agreement stipulates forfeiture of the ammunition involved in the crime. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, alongside the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, conducted the investigation which Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang is prosecuting.
