An Arizona animal control officer involved in a dog-dragging incident in Winslow returned to work on July 10, albeit in a restricted capacity, pending the results of an ongoing administrative review. FOX 10 Phoenix reports that the dog, Raider, has since been safely ensconced behind a new fence at its home, thanks to community fundraising efforts. The Navajo County Attorney's Office has declined to prosecute the officer, according to information released by the Winslow Police Department.
On May 4, a video captured the officer attempting to capture Raider near Winslow High School. The footage depicted a scene where the dog was seen huffing and panting while being pulled across the pavement, causing public concern. After the incident, Winslow Police Chief Franklin Caldwell announced an investigation into the matter, as 12 News notes. The Winslow Police Department also claims conducting a review of its operations, aiming to improve training for its staff.
During the troubling incident, the community rallied around Raider, leading to the erection of a fence around his home with donations from individuals living across Arizona. Winning their hearts on his daily stroll, Raider was accustomed to following a teacher home and receiving treats from neighbors. Jim Sundwall, a resident, recounted to FOX 10 Phoenix Raider's routine, stating, "Raider gets a treat, then goes from house to house getting treats before heading home." One supporter even drove eight hours to build the fence for Raider, showcasing the goodwill of the Arizona community.
While the administrative investigation continues, the animal control officer's return to duty was sanctioned with specific restrictions, as stressed by Police Chief Caldwell in his statement. Though the outcome of that probe remains undisclosed, the Winslow Police Department maintains a position of seriousness regarding any allegations of animal abuse. Police Chief Caldwell asserted in a release that "The City takes all allegations of animal abuse seriously and is conducting a thorough review of Department operations and assessing opportunities to improve training and staff support," said the Winslow Police Department, as detailed by FOX 10 Phoenix.
