A 78-year-old woman bicyclist has succumbed to injuries sustained from being struck by an SUV two weeks prior in North Las Vegas. The North Las Vegas Police Department reported that the incident occurred on August 2 at approximately 4:05 a.m. near the intersection of Tropical Parkway and Losee Road, as noted by FOX5 Vegas.
Responding to the scene, officers found the elderly bicyclist with grievous injuries. She was immediately transported to UMC Trauma Center for emergency care. The vehicle involved, a Chevy Trailblazer, was driving east on Tropical Parkway when it hit the rear of the bicycle, launching the woman onto the hood of the SUV. News 3 LV reports indicated that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the Trailblazer remained at the scene, and authorities have stated that neither impairment nor speed seem to have been contributing factors in the crash. The aftermath of such incidents often prompts a review of traffic laws, infrastructure, and the pervasive dangers faced by cyclists on the road.
On August 16, at around 12:30 p.m., the Clark County Coroner's Office conveyed to the NLVPD that the injured bicyclist had passed away.
