Springfield Police Department's (SPD) Homicide Unit announced an arrest in the year-old case of Gary White's murder. Jared Dewberry, 26, was apprehended at his Agawam residence on Monday, according to SPD news release. Dewberry's capture comes after a collaborative effort including Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Hampden County Sheriff's Department, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, and the Agawam Police.
The incident in question occurred early on August 10, 2023, Saturday, where police responded to a call on East Columbus Avenue, at around 1:35 a.m. They found the gunshot victim, 25-year-old Gary White, who later died at Baystate Medical Center. Now, roughly one year on, authorities, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda of the SPD Homicide Unit, have brought the suspect into custody. The arrest warrant, issued on August 13, 2024, includes charges of murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
At the time of the homicide, Dewberry was on bail for unrelated firearms charges following a June 2020 arrest. Courtesy booking was completed in Agawam prior to Dewberry's transport to Springfield Police Headquarters. He is slated for a Springfield District Court arraignment on Tuesday afternoon.
Dewberry faces several serious charges related to the fatal shooting last year. When reached for an update, Springfield Police provided details of the arrest warrant, noting that in addition to murder, Dewberry was charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. Dewberry's booking photo will become available after his arraignment, as stated in the SPD's press release.
