An Akron man has been handed a 90-month prison sentence for his role in drug trafficking, involving significant quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as firearms possession relating to the operation. Dion Dejournett, 29, pled guilty to charges resulting from an Akron Police Department and FBI investigation and will face subsequent supervised release for five years, according to information from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio.
In June of 2023, the Akron Police Department executed a search warrant at Dejournett’s residence where officers discovered meth, fentanyl, and an assortment of firearms; the recovered substances were later confirmed by laboratory tests as having a combined weight of over 1.5 kilograms, authorities during the search also seized several pistols and a semi-automatic rifle hidden among Dejournett's possessions. Upon his arrest, additional amounts of fentanyl were found on his person, further solidifying his connection to the narcotics found on the premises.
The haul included over 116 grams of fentanyl and almost 1,500 grams of methamphetamine, with the drugs presumably ready for distribution given the presence of packaging materials, cutting agents, and a digital scale in the vicinity. The seized assets, which Dejournett is required to forfeit, encompass not only the $6,000 and firearms found but also any other drug-related materials.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Toepfer, who prosecuted the case, underscores the serious nature of the offenses, noting that Dejournett's actions contributed to the ongoing drug crisis, weapons included in the mix was a point of particular concern due to the potential for violence they represent in the context of illegal drug trade. U.S. District Judge Bridget Meehan Brennan, presiding over the case, determined the 90-month sentence in line with federal guidelines and the evidentiary weight of the charges.
