In a move that underscores the gravity of the situation, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has partnered with several House Democrats demanding an audit into the state’s Department of Education. According to a news release from the Office of the Governor, the collective is scrutinizing how Superintendent Tom Horne has managed, or rather mismanaged, critical public school funding that is designated to support struggling students.
The audit appeal, driven by a desire to protect educational resources, comes in the wake of revelations that the Department of Education failed to adequately distribute $24 million in federal Title I funds. This financial oversight has prompted both outrage and concern over the department’s capability to effectively administer these funds. "I commend the members of the state legislature who are demanding accountability and transparency," Governor Hobbs stated. "It is unconscionable that Superintendent Horne has let tens of millions of dollars disappear from our schools—critical federal funding that helps students succeed. I sincerely hope that the Joint Legislative Audit Committee takes up this investigation and finds out what happened to these resources. Our kids deserve better," as mentioned by the Office of the Governor.
Also vocal on the issue is House Democratic Whip Nancy Gutierrez, who penned the letter requesting the audit. "As our letter states, the actions of the Arizona Department of Education and Superintendent Horne have raised serious questions about their ability to responsibly oversee the state’s education federal funding distribution,” she said. The audit request, they assert, is not only to uncover exactly what went wrong but also to immediately take steps to restore trust in the system that has been allegedly compromised under Horne’s watch, as reported by the Office of the Governor.
With the wellbeing of Arizona’s students hanging in the balance, Governor Hobbs and the involved legislators are pushing the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to swiftly conduct the audit to determine how to prevent future losses. The call for accountability does not seem to be merely about financial reckoning but is rooted in a fundamental commitment to ensuring that educational support reaches those in need. "We need more attention to detail, basic transparency and better communication with schools -- and with us -- to avoid the budget cuts and negative impacts that our schools have experienced," Gutierrez said to the Office of the Governor.
