Representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona has cast his lot with a collection of bipartisan bills geared toward bolstering law enforcement funding within the state's communities. According to a statement on Gallego's official website, announced on August 2nd, the congressman underlined the urgency to amplify resources, training, and recruitment to ensure local law enforcement agencies are thoroughly equipped. "Keeping Arizona families safe and secure is one of my top priorities, and that means investing in our local law enforcement," Gallego affirmed.
The slate includes bills like the Filling Public Safety Vacancies Act, which aims to pour additional federal grant funding into filling vacant law enforcement positions, doubling the available amount for the fiscal year. Another bill, purposed to expand the Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program, seeks to ease the process for grant applications and increase the period of their validity. This piece of legislation, known by the grandiose title of the Enhancing COPS Hiring Program Grants for Local Law Enforcement Act, is designed to also include bonuses for recruitment and retention in its suite of offerings.
Among the measures supported, the Establishing Accreditation Grants for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) Act stands out, proposing a $10 million provision to aid smaller police forces in obtaining or renewing accreditation from duly recognized authorities. Furthermore, the Supporting the Health and Safety of Law Enforcement Act would initiate a grant program aiming to bolster the collaboration between community mental health services and police officers, particularly in matters of mental health, homelessness, and public safety.
In the span of Gallego's congressional service, his actions have funneled upward of $168 billion to law enforcement endeavors, inclusive of beyond $2.2 billion for the COPS initiative alone. Celebrating National Police Week in May of the previous year brought forth a pledge from Gallego to combat the law enforcement shortage pervading the nation by endorsing bills like the Strong Communities Act and the Recruit and Retain Act, as reported in the announcement. These efforts are a testament to "investing in our local law enforcement," as Gallego's statement indicated, echoing the representative's earlier commitment.
The local impact of Gallego's legislative efforts was marked by a joint appearance with Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn and Police Chief Bob Sanders to acknowledge the surge in federal funding for local law enforcement—a direct result of the representative's advocacy. This initiative falls in line with Gallego's ongoing endorsements, like the Invest to Protect Act, that seek to provide smaller police departments, including Tribal ones, with resources for recruitment, safety training, de-escalation techniques, and mental health support for officers.
