The City of Arlington has launched an invitation for East Arlington residents to participate in an innovative grocery delivery pilot program that promises to deliver nonperishable foods right to their doorsteps using autonomous delivery robots and drones. Funded by a hefty $780,182 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, this unique venture is Arlington's bid to find sustainable, emissions-reducing solutions for serving those in need while also addressing mobility challenges.
According to the City of Arlington, the goal here is to run a two-year study that examines how electric, no-emission and low-emission unmanned vehicles can support communities. This innovative approach not only targets emissions reduction but also prioritizes serving historically disadvantaged residents or those without reliable transportation. Interested individuals within the specified regions have until August 30 to throw their hat into the ring for a chance to be part of this futuristic endeavor.
During the week of September 9-13, Arlington and its partners, including Tarrant Area Food Bank and the University of Texas at Arlington, aim to distribute at least 150 food boxes. The deliveries will be carried out by Aerialoop's ALT6-4 VTOL Delivery drones, capable of transporting approximately nine pounds per flight, and Clevon's ground-based autonomous robot, CLEVON 1, "which is equipped with a spacious cargo bay that the participants can unlock with a code to access their food", as stated by the City of Arlington.
The participation criteria are clear cut: Live within the delivery area boundaries, spanning from Abram Street to Pioneer Parkway, and be present to collect your groceries at the time scheduled by the City.
