Jeff Mayo, the guiding force of Arlington Community Schools since its dawn as a municipal district, has stepped down from his role as superintendent, according to an announcement made on July 31. His departure comes following a diagnosis of cancer, which has prompted him to shift his focus toward his health and recovery. Action News 5 reported that the education community, although shaken by the news, holds Mayo in its collective thoughts as it braces for transition.
Scott Benjamin, Chairman of the ACS Education Board, voiced the sentiments of many, saying, "As both board members and citizens of Arlington, as well as friends of Mr. Mayo, our thoughts and prayers are with him as he focuses on his recovery". In the same statement, shared with WREG, Benjamin praised Mayo's strength and dedication. His tenure began in earnest back in 2014 when he was appointed as Chief of Staff after Arlington residents forged their educational district.
In the wake of Mayo's decision to step back, the ACS board has moved swiftly to ensure continuity, appointing Dr. Allison Clark as temporary superintendent. Dr. Clark's history with ACS dates back to 2010 when she served as the principal of Arlington Middle School, and later ascended to the role of Chief of Human Resources in 2020. "Throughout her time with ACS, Dr. Clark has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to the success of our students and staff," Benjamin has noted, highlighting her extensive experience within the school community, as per WREG.
