Security concerns have escalated in light of recent events surrounding the political conventions, with arrests made in Milwaukee and Chicago for individuals carrying firearms. In Milwaukee, a man was detained near the site of the Republican National Convention with a concealed AK-47 pistol, additional ammunition, and other items that raised concern among law enforcement, as reported by The Guardian. The suspect, Donnell Tinsley, 21, was found to possess items such as a flashlight, black gloves, and a Scream mask inside his backpack.
Further east, in Chicago, another arrest occurred near the Democratic National Convention where Juan Pablo Zaldua-Vargas was apprehended by police. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Zaldua-Vargas, previously spotted at the Republican National Convention with a firearm, was found with an unloaded Glock handgun, multiple loaded magazines, and a police-style radio. Despite these findings, Cook County prosecutors declined to charge Zaldua-Vargas with a felony, and he currently faces only a misdemeanor charge.
The arrests come in the shadow of a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, an incident that has inevitably put a spotlight on the security measures in place at these significant political events. The Guardian disclosed that Tinsley faces up to nine months in prison and a potential fine for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. As for Zaldua-Vargas, his initial court date is set for September 9, as per the Chicago Sun-Times.
