As Labor Day weekend approaches, Austin drivers are being put on notice. The Austin Police Department (APD) has announced that they will be in full force with a DWI No Refusal Initiative from Thursday, August 29 to Monday, September 2, as detailed by the City of Austin. This heightened patrol effort is designed to catch and deter impaired drivers, a mission that is of particular importance during a holiday known for its celebrations.

The initiative, clearly focused on preventing drunk driving incidents, gives APD officers the authority to obtain blood search warrants for those who refuse breath or blood tests when lawfully arrested for driving while intoxicated. According to a statement from the City of Austin, the policing effort will not just cover the city streets. Officers are also turning their attention to the highways, high-speed roadways, and waterways, places where speed and alcohol can make for a lethal combination.

Partnering for public safety, the APD and the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department are emphasizing the No Refusal Initiative as a part of their ongoing commitment to reducing fatalities on the road. "The Department is dedicated to making the roadways and waterways of Austin safe for residents and visitors through education and enforcement," an official statement noted.
