The Bay Area is bracing for a brief reprieve from the recent heat as a dynamic weather system moves into the region. The system promises cooler temperatures and a slight chance of light rain. According to the National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area, this cooling trend is expected to last through Saturday, bringing temperatures 10-15 degrees below normal.

More specifically, cooler air aloft and a surface trough near the North Bay will lead to a more substantial marine layer and increased cloud coverage. "Stratus is developing across the SF Bay Area and the Monterey Bay region, expected to continue to develop across the terminals of the SF Bay Area and Central Coast", states the National Weather Service report. Onshore flow will also contribute to gusty winds this afternoon and evening, particularly around SFO, where gusts could reach up to 30 knots.

Rain remains in the forecast for the North and East Bay regions on Friday night into Saturday morning. The NWS Bay Area confirms, "We are still forecasting a slight chance for light rain, especially for the North Bay, on Friday and Saturday with the latest forecast calling for the rain to come later on Friday into Saturday morning." Rainfall totals will likely stay below 0.1 inches, which may not be significant but is certainly welcomed during this time of year.

Towards the end of the weekend and next week, temperatures will rebound quickly as the weather system moves northeast and a ridge builds across the Pacific. Inland areas can expect a significant warm-up, with some spots inching back towards the century mark by Monday. "Temperatures will quickly rebound Sunday through Tuesday as the system exits north and east, and high pressure builds to our west over the open Pacific," the National Weather Service outlines. Meanwhile, mariners are advised to anticipate moderate to fresh northwest breezes into the early weekend, with conditions easing by Saturday and significant wave heights building again by the middle of next week.
