In an effort to bolster citywide pride and beautification, the City of Bellevue has announced a new civic initiative, the Adopt-A-Street program. This volunteer-centric campaign is crafted to engage community members—from families and individuals to businesses and local groups—in the ongoing fight against litter on the city’s thoroughfares. Rolled out as part of the Keep Bellevue Beautiful project, the scheme is designed to delegate a piece of the cleanliness puzzle to those who tread the streets daily and the entities planted along them.

Through Adopt-A-Street, participants are empowered to choose a segment of the street to care for, with a commitment to clear it of trash a minimum of four times annually, extending across at least two years. A map, introduced on the Adopt-A-Street page, serves as a tool for would-be adopters in selecting an area. As an aid to these volunteers, Bellevue is dispensing safety vests, gloves, trash bags, and litter grabbers. The wrong kind of bags, namely Keep Bellevue Beautiful Adopt-A-Street branded ones, will find their way into the hands of Republic Services, through no-cost residential collections and designated dumpster locations.

Figures provided by the city paint a picture of active civic engagement: over 500 volunteers ridding roughly 300 bags of litter from Bellevue streets, tallied in the last 12 months. The new program hinges on that very community spirit, amplifying the efforts of individuals and collectives alike to make a visible impact. Bellevue’s streets, beyond their improved appearance, stand poised to benefit in more profound ways. Prevention of litter ending up in local water bodies, safer pathways for residents, and protection for the native fauna are all packaged into the wholesome mission of Adopt-A-Street.

It is the city's vision that through programs such as Adopt-A-Street, everyone has an “easy way to make a tangible difference in our community.” Ensuring sanitary pathways and safeguarding nature come hand-in-hand with keeping Bellevue both attractive and ecologically sound. Enrollment for the initiative is now open, with the city inviting all interested parties to step forward, adopt overpasses of Bellevue’s streetscape, and become stewards of the environment every quarter-step of the way.
