Early Sunday evening, a fire broke out at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, an incident now under active investigation by local and federal authorities. According to the WMAR-2 News, the Baltimore Police Department and the Fire Investigation Bureau of the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived on the scene Monday, following the discovery of the fire's remnants by a construction crew. The museum, which has been closed for renovations, is scrutinized closely for potential foul play.

In a statement, Howard Libit, the Executive Director of the Baltimore Jewish Council, shared that security camera footage showed an unidentified person lighting an unknown object on fire outside the museum's locked gates and then hastily leaving the area. The Baltimore City Fire Department confirms that its Fire Investigation Bureau, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), initiated its investigative work at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Libit, expressing his deep concerns, as per CBS News, said, "It's hard to believe someone would randomly light a small fire outside an institution that's clearly labeled as Jewish between two historic synagogues that there's not some antisemitic or anti-Israel intent." While the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause and motive for the incident, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire, and as per CBS News, there had been no prior threats to the museum known.
