The Boston Police Department has issued a community alert concerning a spike in thefts of FedEx packages, particularly those containing electronics, from residential areas. According to the BPD, suspects have been observed surveying neighborhoods several hours before the delivery trucks arrive, and the thefts seem to be part of a larger national pattern.
Reports indicate that the thieves, described as male and possibly working in groups, are strategically choosing to wait and swiftly abscond with the delivered goods. Predominantly, electronics are being targeted, with assailants making away with the valuable cargo shortly after it's dropped off. The alert, issued on August 22, 2024, points out the use of various vehicles by the suspects in these crimes, complicating efforts to quickly identify and apprehend them.
To help combat this issue, the Boston Police Department has provided a list of tips to ensure parcels are delivered safely and end up in the intended hands. These precautions include rerouting FedEx packages to local stores for pickup and requesting that carriers leave a notice for package pickup at the local post office instead of leaving items unattended. Additionally, customers are encouraged to put a temporary hold on their deliveries if they plan to be away from home for a prolonged period of time.
Thefts occur less likely when such pre-emptive steps are taken, keeping the parcels out of the reach of opportunistic thieves. The police urge those who have fallen victim to these thefts to report the incidents immediately and remind everyone to call 9-1-1 if they witness a crime in progress or require police assistance.
