Mayor Michelle Wu has appointed Dana Alas as the new Executive Director for the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement (MOWA), the office announced earlier this week. Alas, who has over two decades of experience in labor advocacy and who has worked on a multitude of initiatives and campaigns at both local and statewide levels, will now head MOWA. The office, which falls under the City’s Equity & Inclusion Cabinet, is aimed at fostering gender equity by empowering women and dismantling systemic barriers that impede their progress.
"Dana’s understanding of grassroots healthcare organizing and commitment to furthering equity have already led her to achieve numerous successful campaigns and initiatives in Boston," Mayor Wu expressed in a statement to the City of Boston. With Alas' extensive background in advocating for women, low-income, immigrant, and workers of color, MOWA is poised to develop new policies tailored to the changing needs and roles of women in Boston.
Mariangely Solis Cervera, Chief of Equity & Inclusion, also welcomed Alas, emphasizing the importance of economic equity, health, safety, and representation for all women in the city. In her statement, Alas expressed her commitment to her new role: "I am honored to serve as the Executive Director for the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement," she said, "I am passionate about driving change for Boston’s women, and I look forward to working alongside our team to promote gender equity in our City," as mentioned in the City's announcement.
Under Alas’ leadership, MOWA's agenda includes pioneering policies for addressing women's evolving needs, enhancing support for working women and girls, expanding initiatives like menstrual equity, and propelling economic mobility, according to the City's announcement. The office has already begun a Menstrual Equity pilot and other education programs to ensure menstrual products and understanding are accessible – building upon efforts such as the Women's Learn-to-Bike series and celebrating local female leaders during Women’s History Month.
