Seven Bradenton residents have entered guilty pleas to federal charges related to their involvement in a methamphetamine trafficking ring that operated in and around Manatee County. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Clemente Betancourt, Estevan Betancourt, Larry Lee Woodard, Jr., Adonis Bonilla, Omar Mejia, Jesse Leahy, and Alexander Perez are all facing the potential of life sentences in federal prison for conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute over 50 grams of methamphetamine.

From March 2022 to May 2023, each defendant played a role in distributing the narcotics. During their arrest, a search of the Betancourt residence yielded a significant cache of drugs and weapons, including one pound of methamphetamine, three firearms, and more than 22 cell phones, among other illicit substances. The United States is intent on forfeiting any property considered to be proceeds from these offenses, targeting what they have gathered in the wake of criminal endeavor.

The operation was uncovered through the concerted efforts of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, a coalition that boasts partnerships from agencies such as Homeland Security Investigations, the FBI, and multiple state and local law enforcement entities dotting the Gulf Coast. The culpability of these individuals was, in part, an intelligence-driven response by the OCDETF to identify and undercut the machinations of high-level criminal organizations menacing the states. The sentencing dates for the defendants are not yet set, but the impact extends beyond them.
