The Brentwood Police Department announced that it will conduct a DUI Checkpoint on Friday as part of its efforts to reduce impaired driving. The operation, scheduled between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., will occur at a location within Brentwood that has yet to be disclosed to the public. As noted in a Facebook post, the spot chosen is typically one with a history of DUI-related accidents and arrests.
The DUI checkpoint initiative prioritizes public safety by attempting to dissuade individuals from driving while impaired rather than merely focusing on making arrests. Officers at the checkpoint will monitor for signs of drivers being under the influence of not just alcohol but also drugs, including legal substances like prescription medication and marijuana, that can still render a driver unfit for the road.
Drivers need to recognize that legal substances can impair their ability to drive safely. The Brentwood Police Department has taken the opportunity to remind its community that certain prescription medicines, over-the-counter drugs, and even marijuana—despite its legal status—can significantly hinder a driver's capabilities, as they stated in the original announcement. An impaired driving charge can result in severe financial consequences, with first-time DUI offenses costing an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with the loss of driving privileges.
The funding for the upcoming checkpoint comes from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
