Brooklyn Park is making sure residents have plenty of options to stay entertained, healthy, and socially engaged this summer. From free food distribution to a diverse array of recreational activities, the city's Department of Recreation and Parks is the beating heart of the community's summer schedule.
In their bid to ensure no one goes hungry in the community, Brooklyn Park's "Good in the Hood" food event is gearing up to offer up to 30 pounds of food per individual on Tuesday, August 13, with no sign-up required. According to an announcement, the focus on providing "access to quality food," especially fresh dairy, produce, and meat, underlines an aim to directly impact community well-being. Adults aren't being left out of the fun, either. With a plethora of programs ranging from city tours to technology education sessions, the city's July-September guide promises opportunities for every interest.
National Night Out gets a local spin with Brooklyn Park's Night Out on August 6, sandwiched between a music festival that zeroes in on Sounds of Asia on August 3, and a Summer Concert at Historic Eidem Farm on August 8. It's not just about fun though; the Zanewood Recreation Center takes a deep dive into a seven-week Youth Wellness Journey program beginning July 25, aimed squarely at supporting young people's mental and physical health.
Honing new skills and uncovering hidden talents is also on the docket, with the Zanewood Recording Studio open for young musicians and a new Fashion 101 Club starting July 15. More athletically inclined youths have a plethora of sports camps to choose from, including tennis, basketball, and soccer, thanks to partnerships with organizations like the Sanneh Foundation. Should summer heat or storms keep you indoors, the Rec on the Go program promises to deliver recreation opportunities to children, regardless of the weather. At Brooklyn Park, there's something to keep everyone engaged "to make a greater impact for our community," as the organizers put it.
The community's commitment extends beyond recreational activities. The Honored 2 Help organization hosts its annual Back 2 School BBQ on August 17th, distributing free school supplies, clothes, and, of course, BBQ. Such events aim to equip students for the school year ahead and strengthen community ties. Need to work on your softball swing? Courage Kenny is hosting an All-Abilities Softball Camp on August 16, proving that Brooklyn Park's summer outreach leaves no stone unturned. Details for all these events can be found on the city's website or through the various event pages.
