On Friday morning, Buckeye High School was forced to evacuate due to a reported gas leak, with firefighters and emergency responders from various Arizona cities responding to the scene. According to ABC15, strong gas odors were detected in two buildings, and gas meters confirmed the presence of a leak. Southwest Gas, the utility company, was called in to address the issue.
Buckeye Fire Department officials found a gas appliance in one of the two story buildings to be the source of the leak, leading to immediate action to prevent any potential dangers. The safety concern was significant enough that students were sent home for the remainder of the day to ensure their well-being. First responders from multiple jurisdictions, including Goodyear, Glendale, Avondale, and Phoenix, offered their support during this incident.
The gas leak also led to the cancellation of classes at Buckeye Union High School, disrupting the day's schedule. In a statement obtained by Arizona's Family, Superintendent Dr. Steve Bebee explained, "A gas leak at Buckeye Union High School has been deemed serious, and as a result, the campus is considered unsafe to continue school for the day."
Moreover, Dr. Bebee further detailed the precautionary measures taken: "In accordance with the guidance of the Buckeye Fire Department and the Goodyear Fire Department, students have been evacuated to the gymnasium, and we are thankful to report that all students are safe." As part of the evacuation process, students were relocated to the gym before being sent home, as was shown in aerial footage captured by Arizona Family's drone. The Dr. Saide Rec Center opened its doors for students who needed a safe place to go during the event.
