Last night, a potentially fatal encounter was averted when Buckeye police officers managed to resolve a dangerous situation involving an armed suspect, without injuries. The incident began after the police received a distress call from a woman, claiming her husband was brandishing a gun and threatening her life. Officers arrived at a residence near Miller Rd and Burgess Ln at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Upon their arrival, the suspect, later identified as 51-year-old Edward Rivas, discharged his firearm at the police, prompting an officer-involved shooting. In a sequence that could have led to multiple tragedies, the officers' training might have been the thin line between life and death. No officers were injured during the exchange, as the suspect retreated back inside the home. Ultimately, after a tense standoff, Rivas emerged and was detained without further incident just after 1 a.m.
Rivas was subsequently booked on aggravated assault charges, according to the Buckeye police department. The Peoria Police Department is now leading an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, collaborating with the West Valley Investigative Response Team (WVIRT), to uncover all pertinent details of the confrontation. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
