The Calexico East Port of Entry became the scene of an unusual smuggling attempt when a 55-year-old woman was caught trying to smuggle over 50 pounds of sea cucumbers into the United States from Mexico. According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the dried sea cucumbers were discovered during a routine vehicle inspection last Wednesday morning.
In their report, CBP detailed that an officer directed the woman and her 2014 sedan for further inspection upon finding the contraband in the vehicle's trunk. During the follow-up inspection, a CBP agriculture specialist confirmed the presence of 53.79 pounds of dried sea cucumbers. "This interception highlights the dedication and vigilance of our CBP officers and agriculture specialists in protecting our borders and natural resources," Area Port Director Roque Caza remarked, as per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The effort to conceal and transport these organisms speaks to a broader issue: the illegal wildlife trade and its impact on conservation.
The smuggling of sea cucumbers is a significant concern due to strict international regulations to prevent over-harvesting and protect marine ecosystems. Flouting these measures disrespects the legal framework and undermines efforts to maintain environmental balance. CBP has since seized the sea cucumbers and handed them to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for further action.
