The Cambridge Community Safety Department (CSD) has officially announced a significant investment in local violence prevention initiatives. Four Cambridge organizations will receive grant funding aimed at supporting a range of programs designed to bolster community safety and address trauma related to violence. Each of the chosen groups will get an infusion of $150,000 to expand their work in creating safer neighborhoods across Cambridge.
Awarded organizations include Community Service Care, Inc., InnerCity Weightlifting, Inc., My Brother’s Keeper Cambridge, and Transition House — each with their unique approach to combating various forms of violence and their consequences. The funds are part of the city's endeavor to foster environments where all residents have opportunities to thrive, free from the concern of violence, according to a statement on the City of Cambridge's website.
Community Service Care, Inc., through its Cambridge Holistic Emergency Alternative Response Team (HEART), focuses on marginalized groups, aiming to disrupt cycles of harm by responding to crises and promoting research and community unity. The grant will particularly help in bringing on responders for the HEARTLine, as well as in mobile response initiatives.
Focused on those most affected by systemic racism and mass incarceration, InnerCity Weightlifting reveals the potential within individuals by guiding them into careers in fitness and beyond, acknowledging their expertise not only in personal training but in their lived experiences of social issues. Transition House directs its efforts toward domestic violence intervention and prevention, providing crucial community programs that prevent homelessness, and empower survivors to rebuild their lives. The grant will support their operations and enable them to hire key staff such as Children Services Coordinator and a Community Advocate.
The rigorous selection process of these organizations occurred from May to June 2024, and the CSD requires each to implement their programs by June 30, 2025.
