Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stationed at the Anzalduas International Bridge successfully intercepted a substantial amount of cocaine with an estimated street value of over $260,000. The seizure took place as a grey Honda SUV attempted to make its way from Mexico into the United States, according to a CBP press release.
The vehicle attracted the attention of the CBP officials on August 17, who were determined to thoroughly examine vehicles crossing the bridge. In an effort to efficiently distinguish between law-abiding travelers and potential smugglers, a CBP officer referred the suspicious SUV for a more rigorous inspection, which included the use of non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment. This technology has proven to be an invaluable asset for the officers to eventually uncover hidden contraband.
During the physical inspection, officers were able to recover 13 packages containing alleged cocaine, weighing in total approximately 34.17 pounds (15.50 kilograms). The narcotics were ingeniously concealed within the structure of the vehicle, posing a challenge even for the seasoned eyes of the CBP officers. However, the diligent efforts of the team led to the discovery and subsequent seizure of the significant quantity of illegal drugs.
"Our CBP officers remain vigilant and used all of our available tools and resources to thwart this smuggling attempt," said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez from the same press release by CBP. He added, "Our ability to filter out smugglers from legitimate travelers is paramount in securing our border." The driver of the vehicle was arrested almost immediately, and Homeland Security Investigations special agents took over the case, initiating a criminal investigation. The narcotics, along with the vehicle, were seized by the CBP OFO as evidence.
