Over the weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Rio Grande City Port of Entry made a substantial drug bust, seizing more than $3 million worth of cocaine. According to a CBP release, the discovery was made during an inspection of a tractor trailer initially hauling what appeared to be a shipment of charcoal.
The seizure is a part of CBP's continued efforts to combat the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States. Port Director Rogelio Olivares commented on the bust, "Our frontline officers continue to exercise vigilance in the cargo environment and their inspection skill coupled with technology and our canine unit all contributed to this significant seizure." These methods were clearly effective on August 24, when officers referred the suspicious trailer for a meticulous secondary inspection, which went on to thoroughly reveal the hidden drugs, according to the CBP official website.
The CBP team's comprehensive examination included the use of a non-intrusive inspection system and the assistance of CBP canines. Their collaboration led to the discovery of 100 packages containing a total of 228 pounds of alleged cocaine hidden within the vehicle. The narcotics carry a significant street value, estimated at $3,044,859—a testament to the value of the vigilant work done by the CBP officers at the entry port.
The seizure underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking across the U.S. border and the measures being taken to safeguard against it. "Seizures like these exemplify CBP’s commitment to advancing our border security mission while facilitating lawful trade and travel," said Olivares in a statement on the release that reinforces the dual role CBP plays in enforcing security and maintaining lawful passage. CBP seized the narcotics, and the case has since been handed over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents who are actively investigating the incident.
