Customs and Border Protection officers at Del Rio Port of Entry recently thwarted a substantial drug smuggling attempt, intercepting a blend of narcotics with a street value exceeding $653,000. The seizure, a mix of cocaine, brown heroin, and black tar heroin, took place at the Del Rio International Bridge, as detailed by CBP.
"This significant seizure of mixed hard narcotics underscores not only the seriousness of the drug threat our officers face every day but also illustrates the effectiveness of our border security efforts employed at the port," said Liliana Flores, Port Director, Del Rio Port of Entry, in the press release. The interception occurred on August 12, when a 24-year-old U.S. citizen driving a Ford pickup, towing another pickup on a utility trailer, was selected for a more in-depth inspection by CBP officers.
A thorough secondary examination, equipped with a non-intrusive inspection system and the assistance of CBP canines, revealed several hidden packages. These contained nearly 21 pounds of alleged cocaine, close to eight pounds of alleged brown heroin, and over 13 pounds of alleged black-tar heroin. The narcotics were ingeniously concealed within the hauled vehicle.
The driver was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations special agents, who, have launched a criminal investigation. In addition to the contraband, CBP agents also confiscated the vehicle.
