Chamblee, Georgia has found itself in the midst of an unusual larceny case as police seek a suspect in the theft of over $30,000 in antiques from a local store. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the theft occurred on July 2 at the Chamblee Antiques and Interiors on Broad Street. The stolen goods include a Chinese jade brush pot valued at around $32,000, a corresponding rosewood stand, and the book "Masterworks of Chinese Jade in the National Palace Museum."
Detective Nathan Wolf of the Chamblee Police described the theft as "It was just, kind of, it was a very bold, and brazen thing to do at 1 p.m. in the afternoon." Surveillance footage allowed authorities to describe the suspect as a heavy-set white male, spotted wearing a grey Carhartt hoodie, khaki pants, and black shoes. He had on a surgical face mask, black glasses, and a particularly noticeable hat, both on the day of the theft and in previous footage from the store.
Speaking of the suspect's previous behavior, "He was in the store about the Saturday before, wearing different clothing, but the same hat though," Detective Wolf told FOX 5 Atlanta. This detail suggests the perpetrator may have carefully planned the theft, scoping out the store earlier. Wolf also commented, conveying that the theft might have been more impulsive, stating, "I don’t think this is some great Ocean’s 11’s style art heist or anything like that. I just think this was someone who was browsing through the store, so an item that looked valuable but was way out of their price ranged, maybe they said oh well maybe I’ll just take the five finger discount and snap the lock and walk out the front door"
Additional information from Decaturish includes a plea from the police to the public for assistance in identifying the suspect. The press release they issued provided a description of his attire which, aside from the already mentioned clothing, included a hat with an unknown design. The store has responded by posting the suspect’s photo near the register, hoping it will jog a memory or lead to his identification.
The Chamblee Police Department emphasizes the uniqueness of the suspect's look despite the mask and believes the hat could be key in identifying him.
